The Rijksmuseum (State Museum) in Amsterdam reopens its doors today after a 10-year renovation!
The museum exhibits over 8,000 objects including masterpieces by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Steen and other paintings from the Dutch Golden Age.
The museum is open 365 days a year from 9am until 5pm. It’s free for children aged 18 and under, Museumkaart holders, members of ICOM, ICOMOS, UNESCO, the Rembrandt Association (Vereniging Rembrandt), KOG, Vrienden van de Aziatische Kunst and Vrienden van het Rijksmuseum.
Good to know (to avoid queues!): Museumkaart and e-ticket holders do not have to wait in the queue in order to get tickets. – You can buy tickets online.

It was really an incredible re-opening ceremony (here’s an impression, the text is in Dutch but part of it is available in English on the same site: https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/nl/nu-in-het-museum/nieuws/koningin-beatrix-opent-rijksmuseum-met-gouden-sleutel). Queen Beatrix did open it with the golden key.

Is there any story behind the fact that it took 10 years to renovate? Or was it just that there was a lot of work to do?

Well, Stephen, the renovation took much longer than it was intended at the beginning. Especially the renovation of the main galleries didn’t progress as smoothly as anticipated, so that instead of reopening it in 2008 (after 5 years), it took twice the time… The cost for the renovation was about 300million Euro… The renovation was already completed in July of 2012 but it took this long to re-transfer the museum’s many masterpieces – about 8000 items of art and historical artefacts – to their new positions. They also added some new public facilities and an Asian Pavillon and, as far as I know, it will be now the first national museum to stay open every day of the year.

We were actually in Amsterdam last weekend but only watch the reopening ceremonies on TV…there were way too many people to attempt going. We will have to make another trip to visit it when the craze has die down a bit…

Yes, it was incredibly crowded, but worth to watch. Are you going to stay in Amsterdam for longer?

We were in Amsterdam only for the weekend – arrived on Friday night and left on Sunday night. Very quick visit mostly to visit two of our friends who live there and we were hoping to see the tulips but obviously there weren’t any yet this year!!!
