Are you considering to buy a mobile phone for your child for Christmas (or Birthday)? Childnet‘s mobile phone checklist (using the UK Mobile Operators Code of Practice) is a great resource for making sure that all safeguards are in place. Mobile phones should be treated the same way as computers, as they have many of the same compatibilities. Here are some considerations that should be made for these devices:
1) Know how your child’s phone works (e.g. Bluetooth, Internet access etc.)
2) Agree the type of content that you would be happy for them to download, knowingly receive or send on to others
3) Save any abusive messages or inappropriate images for evidence purposes
4) Decide together what are acceptable bills
5) Encourage balanced use (switching off at mealtimes, bedtime etc.)
